Irish Add Okotcha

Texas is a state that has a wealth of high school football talent and Notre Dame is starting to cash in. Today, the Irish coach staff received a verbal commitment from cornerback Bennett Okotcha from Coppell High School (Texas)

A week after landing a commitment from Coppell running back Can McDaniel, the Irish received a verbal commitment from one of his teammates, cornerback Bennett Okotcha (5-foot-11, 175-pounds).

"I've committed to Notre Dame," Okotcha, said. "I talked to coach Cooks and he said he was excited and how everyone was excited for me to be a part of Notre Dame."

Okotcha had previously been committed to Wisconsin and Okotcha hadn't been on the Notre Dame radar until recently.

"A few weeks ago my coach told me that they (Notre Dame) were interested in me and then they offered last week," he said. "I was very excited. Notre Dame is such good school and when a school of that caliber offers, you have to understand that you've truly been blessed. That's how I feel.

"I was really excited. I told them how I felt. I told that I had a lot of thinking to do and that I'd get back to them."

After considering his options and then speaking with his family, Bennett felt comfortable making a change to Notre Dame.

"It just ended up that Notre Dame outweighed Wisconsin and I felt that I'd fit in better there." Okotcha explained. "There's so many of reasons, but the tradition there, and how important football is over there.

"I've always wanted to be a part of a community where football is very important and that's the way Notre Dame is. And the fans are crazy there. It's just a big deal to play football there."

The surprising part of Okotcha's commitment is that he hasn't set foot on Notre Dame's campus. Despite that, Bennett doesn't have any reservations.

"I haven't been there yet," he said. "I've heard from some of my close friends that have been to Notre Dame that it's just a great environment. I've talked to Cam about it, so I'm familiar with it, but not familiar with it.

"Anytime you can go somewhere and experience something new, your knowledge is going to grow. I did want to move away from home to play football. I just wanted to experience something different and I know I can get that with Notre Dame."
