All Irish: Ben Councell

Councell faxed his LOI early Wednesday

OLB prospect one of a trio of freshman perimeter linebackers joining Bob Diaco's defense for 2011.

Ben Councell (OLB – 6'5/225): Joins Anthony Rabasa and Early Enrollee Ishaq Williams as OLB prospects signing with the Irish…Expected to compete for DOG/Drop linebacker duties next fall, a position with a more forgiving two-deep than the player proven CAT position…None of his veteran competitors started a game last season though both were valuable special teams competitors…Will enter summer competition in a bit of a disadvantage with fellow Drop prospect Williams already in the fold for the duration of the spring semester and practice sessions, though it's a four-to-five year scholarship…Should be part of the next generation of Irish OLB as the defense loses two OLB (Filer and Fleming) following 2011 season.

Kelly recruiting profile: Big Skill
Returning outside linebackers: Steve Filer (DOG), Darius Fleming (CAT), Dan Fox (OLB/ILB), Prince Shembo (CAT), Danny Spond (played ILB in 2010), Justin Utupo (CAT)

Baumhower on Councell: He's a long, rangy outside linebacker. Defensive coordinator Bob Diaco said that he wanted to get "long" on defense and this is the type of guy the staff wants to recruit.

Berk on Councell: I fully expect big things out of Councell once he gets with Paul Longo and Jake Flint in the Irish strength program. I have watched players with similar physical builds develop into monster players and I expect the same out of Councell.
