IE Quick Take: Gunner Kiel

Gunner Kiel will go down in Notre Dame recruiting lore, adding his name at the last moment to a trio of early enrollees for Notre Dame in the Class of 2012. Irisheyes.com offers its first take on the newest member of the team's class.

The high's and low's of recruiting hit Notre Dame this past weekend as one top pledge made a change away from the Irish, and another could not find his way to the airport and instead drove to South Bend and became the biggest haul of the 2012 class for Brian Kelly.

A Scout.com five-star quarterback prospect from Columbus (IN) East High School, Gunner Kiel gives Brian Kelly and Irish fans something each felt was needed to have a class worth cheering about.

WHAT TO LIKE

Kiel has the physical size you look for at the quarterback position. What sets him apart from others is how he'll fit into Kelly's offensive system as he's shown the ability to move his feet and extend the pocket to keep a play alive. While his arm strength is good, improvement can still be made as he matures and works in the Irish strength program.

The biggest thing to like is the fact Kiel is in school and will take part in spring drills giving him a chance to compete for the starting job in the fall.

WHAT MAY CONCERN YOU

Is Kiel the answer Kelly and Irish fans hope he is? If not both will be disappointed as the biggest question mark during the season was play at the quarterback position. Kiel will have a ton of pressure on his shoulders to become the quarterback that leads the Irish back into contention for BCS games and a National Championship.

BOTTOM LINE

The roller coaster ride is over as Kiel has been official announced as a student at Notre Dame. No more talk or questions surrounding his future as Irish fans can enjoy getting the nation's top quarterback in the class when it looked as if the Irish would finish without one in the class.

Kiel has all the tools to pick up Kelly's offense early and have success. He'll go through growing pains but has shown he's a student of the game and brings solid leadership skills.

This spring will be a major factor as to what Irish fans can expect out of Kiel at the start of the season. So make your plans now for the spring game.
