Analyzing 2013: Tight End Targets

Adam Breneman

Recruiting for the class of 2013 is in full swing, and Notre Dame smack in the middle of identifying and offering prospects. Trying to make sense of it all can be confusing, so IrishEyes.com continues its series in which it will provide a unit-by-unit breakdown of Notre Dame's top offered targets. This edition hits on the tight ends.

‘Tis the season for offers to be flying out left and right, and the picture is muddied by the fact written offers cannot be received until the start of a prospects senior year.

The spring evaluation period is approaching, classes are already being formed and targets are already in Notre Dame's crosshairs.

To help make sense of the new recruiting class, and to give an indication of where prospects stand in their recruitment, IrishEyes.com begins a series of position-by-position breakdowns of players Notre Dame has offered.

(Please note more offers are going out.)

Notre Dame didn't bring in a tight end in the 2012 class, and the staff is telling recruits one is the likely number for the 2013 class. Here is a look at the offered targets:

Adam Breneman, 6-5, 220, Cedar Cliff High, Camp Hill, Pa.
The Skinny: Breneman can pick nearly any school in the country, and Notre Dame is a serious option. He has been to campus, likes the staff and will be back again in the spring. However, competition for him his stiff, and getting him out of Pennsylvania could be a chore. Notre Dame has a legitimate shot, and the way the staff uses the tight end is crucial.

Mike Heuerman, 6-4, 220, Barron Collier High, Naples, Fla.
The Skinny: Heuerman will be on campus in early March and said he is giving the Irish a very hard look. However, his brother plays at Ohio State and the Buckeyes moved in with an offer recently, which will make it tougher for the Irish. LSU, Miami, Auburn and South Carolina are a few other big-name schools to offer.
If the Irish landed Heuerman and Breneman, they would take two tight ends. Otherwise, the plan is to take one.

Desean Smith, 6-4, 220, Barbe High, Lake Charles, La.
The Skinny: LSU has offered and will be very hard to beat providing the Tigers want to take him. Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma and so on offered the talented pass-catching prospect.

Hunter Henry, 6-6, 235, Pulaski Academy, Little Rock, Ark.
The Skinny: The Irish jumped in recently with an offer, but have plenty of ground to make up. Henry already visited Alabama for junior day and also has a visit to Arkansas and Miami on the docket. He is being recruited mostly by southern and Big 12 schools
