DE James Talks Notre Dame Offer

Alec James

Prior to Saturday's Blue Gold game, Brookfield (Wis.) High defensive end Alec James met with Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly and was offered a scholarship. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound James then spoke with IrishEyes.com about the turn of events.

Brookfield (Wis.) East High defensive end Alec James was one of a handful of class of 2013 prospects without offers to venture to Notre Dame's spring game without an offer.

And the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder was the only one to leave with an offer.

"I think the offer is great," he said. "It means a lot that (assistant) coach (Bob) Elliott got me looked at there, and they took the time to look at my film. And I thought the campus was beautiful."

Prior to the Blue Gold game, James took a tour of the campus and met with coach Brian Kelly to learn more about the program, and how the Irish see him fitting into the defense.

"I liked the whole view of Notre Dame, and the stature and surroundings," he said. "I went to the head coach's office before the game started and talked to him, and he told me a little bit about Notre Dame, and told me with my character and ability, I would fit perfect, and he offered me a scholarship."

James plays running back and defensive end for East High, but he is being recruited to play on the defensive side of the ball in college. He finished his junior season with 86 tackles, including 13 sacks.

He also holds offers from Iowa State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Illinois, Western Michigan and Wisconsin.

And while he was humbled and grateful for the Notre Dame offer, he isn't ready to make a decision, nor does he know when one would come.

"I have no leader," he said. "Wisconsin and Michigan State are tied and now that Notre Dame and Illinois offered, they are up there as well. But I haven't had enough time to process them and think about it.

There is one reason James wants to tame his time before making a decision.

"I don't have a set date on when to decide," he said. "I want to keep my word when I make my verbal."
