IrishEyes.com continues its "14 in 14" series, which profiles each of the freshman enrolling this month at Notre Dame. It is running for 14 successive days, and the latest player on the list is Klein Oak High (Spring, Texas) safety Nick Baratti.

Nick Baratti figures he is in for quite an adjustment this week as he enrolls and Notre Dame, and not only with the summer conditioning and football study but also when he hits the classroom.

The 6-foot-2, 208-pound Baratti is a business major, and he is opening his Notre Dame academic career with a doozy.

“I’m taking a calculus class when I get there, and I think that will be kind of difficult,” he said. “I just have to stay focused on everything and make sure I’m getting my studies done, too, along with my summer workouts and make sure I feel comfortable and right.

“I was surprised. I emailed back to say, ‘Are you sure this is what I’m taking?’ ”

Baratti played myriad positions – quarterback, running back, tight end, receiver and safety -- at Klein Oak High in Spring, Texas, but he will settle into Notre Dame’s secondary once training camp begins and play safety, although it was not detailed whether he will be a free or strong safety.

And he is not planning on taking the fall off.

“I’m for sure not red-shirting,” Baratti said. “If I stay healthy through the summer I’m not going to red-shirt. I guess they don’t have any depth at safety. I’d like to get on the field. Who wouldn’t want to get on the field their freshman year? I want to play a role somewhere.”

Baratti added nearly 10 pounds since the end of the season despite the increased running in his workout program, which was outlined by the Irish.

“I’ve been running, working out,” he said. “I have a trainer and I’ve been to see him a lot. I’ve been watching different film that coach gives me.

“The running is difficult. That was the only thing to me that I thought was pretty hard. The running kind of kicks your (butt). It’s a bunch of 350s, long distance, but you push through it. I’ve gotten used to it. “
