A month after five-star outside linebacker Jaylon Smith pledged to the Irish, four-star outside linebacker Alex Anzalone made the expected announcement moments ago when he said he was heading to Notre Dame. He will enroll in January and take part in spring practice.
The academics really tipped the iceberg for me," he said on ESPNU. "I'm really close with the commits there. I'm close with (tight end commit) Mike Heuerman. We're going to room together there."
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Anzalone, who had close to 40 offers, trimmed his list recently to the Irish, Penn State and Florida. He made the decision last weekend, and announced it moments ago at The Opening in Beaverton, Ore.
A one-time Ohio State commit, Anzalone was originally offered by Notre Dame to play running back, but will head to South Bend, Ind., as an outside linebacker. He is rated as the No. 4 outside linebacker in 2013 class.
Azalone made 54 tackles playing outside linebacker and scored 13 touchdowns running the ball as a junior. He also averaged 11.3 yards per carry in limited action on offense.
