Berk's Breakdown: Devin Butler

Berk continues his review of Notre Dame's 2013 recruiting class with a look at defensive back pledge Devin Butler.

GENERAL BREAKDOWN

HT – WT – SPEED: At a reported 6-foot-1, Devin Butler has the height the Irish staff covets for cornerback prospects. While he'll need to gain more weight, he's built to add the pounds that will allow him to compete at the college level while keeping his willingness to throw his body into plays. There are questions about his straight line speed but I believe he shows quick feet and burst.

QUICKNESS – AGILITY – BALANCE: This is the area that Butler excels as he uses quick feet to go with his balance to make plays on both sides of the football. Does a great job of changing direction.

STRENGTH: While Butler plays the game with a physical attitude he'll need to continue getting physically stronger. He might lack brute strength but Butler shows good recoil in his lower body and is able to fill a gap and make a play in run support.

BODY FLEXIBILITY: If Butler didn't have above average flexibility he wouldn't be able to make the many quick step change of direction cuts he shows during game action.

ON THE FIELD

Butler plays with the mentality of a ball in a pinball machine. He has a future in the return game as well as on the defensive side of the ball. Add in the ability to play receiver and Butler becomes an even safer recruit. If he can keep his physical style of play at Notre Dame, there could be thoughts of moving him to safety. However, he's expected to be a corner that can play press coverage and physically beat on receivers.

OVERALL

Butler will have a major adjustment when he arrives at Notre Dame. Sometimes analysts look at numbers more than we should, but that's a mistake with Butler, who Butler seems to have a nose for the ball, putting himself in position to make plays. The use of a quick step-over cut and great burst makes him a player who should be looked as both a punt or kickoff return man.
