Newell Excited By Irish

Peyton Newell already holds double digit offers from major programs across the country, but there's still one school the 2014 defensive lineman hopes will offer in the near future. IrishEyes.com checks in with Newell for the latest.

Having already collected double digit offers, Hiawatha (Kans.) 2014 defensive lineman Peyton Newell has several teams in hot pursuit. But one school would go right to the top if they offered the 6-foot-3, 275-pounder.

"Notre Dame is a school I grew up supporting as I always watched them on Saturdays," said Newell. "I'm also Catholic and the tradition and legacy is something I really like about them.

"It definitely would mean a lot," said Newell of an Irish offer. "When you think of college football, Notre Dame definitely one of the first schools that comes to mind. So it would be a big deal."

Newell has visited several campuses this summer but is looking forward to his game day visit to South Bend.

"I'm going up to the game against Wake Forest," said Newell. "It's the weekend of my birthday and should be fun and exciting."

Despite offers from Pac-12, SEC, Big 10, and several Big 12 programs, Newell is still surprised by all the attention.

"It was definitely overwhelming as I figured I might get one or two offers towards the end of my senior year," said Newell. "But I never figured it would be like this."

With all the early offers, is Newell ready to trim his list of favorites down?

"It's too early as I'm trying to give everyone a fair chance," said Newell. "I want to be able to see what my options will be in the end. Right now I'm looking more towards the end of next summer before I'll make a decision."

After taking part in many camps and combines across the country, Newell is ready to get his junior season underway.

"We start our season on August 31st and I'm excited," said Newell. "All of these camps and visits get old after awhile so I'm ready to start playing games."
