Irish to take on Defending Champs

The Irish last faced Alabama in 1987

The matchup won't be official until Sunday evening, but No. 1 Notre Dame will take on 2012 BCS Champion and current No. 2 Alabama in Miami for the 2013 crown on January 7.

SOUTH BEND -- Notre Dame vs. the defending and current SEC and national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. (Contrary to popular belief, those titles aren't mutually exclusive.)

Network television, electronic and print media, fans, and college football diehards and passers-by alike couldn't have asked for more.

The nation's most storied football program finished the 2012 regular season atop the polls. The nation's second most storied football program and the sport's reigning best will face off for all the marbles in Miami.

The teams have met six times, all in a 14-season span, with the Irish holding a 5-1 edge including a decisive victory in their last matchup, 37-6 over the 10th ranked Crimson Tide 25 years ago last month in South Bend.

Including the forthcoming title tile, Alabama has been ranked in each of the seven matchups between the programs with the Irish ranked in all but one, their lone defeat, 28-10 in Birmingham, 1986.
