No. 6 ranked shooting guard visits Irish

Sophomore shooting guard Jalen Coleman of Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral touts an offer from the Irish and he visited Notre Dame last weekend. His head coach explains where Coleman stands in the recruiting process and what kind of player the guard is on the court.

The No. 6 ranked shooting guard in 2015, Jalen Coleman of Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral, visited Notre Dame last weekend.

"I know he had a really good time on his visit to Notre Dame," Andy Fagan, head coach of the Cathedral basketball team, said. "To be honest, a decision is a ways off. He has no list because it's still very early in the process for him. Once his sophomore year is over, he'll start to look more in the recruiting direction."

In addition to Notre Dame, Coleman has offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State and Purdue. He's also generating interest from Michigan and Louisville.

"Right now, he's visiting schools and watching games and seeing certain things he likes about them," Fagan said. "He's in the fact-gathering stage at 16-years old. Each year, he'll dial in more and more. Knowing what school he wants to go to right now is like him knowing what he wants to major in at this point."

As his head coach, Fagan says the 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard is a versatile playmaker who excels in a variety of roles on the floor.

"He does so many things well," Fagan said. "He's a playmaker, that's his biggest strength. He can create his own shot, and he can also create so well for others. He's very coachable, and he has an unbelievable work ethic. He's always looking for ways to get better. As a sophomore this year, he stepped up a lot as a leader and as a teammate. Often, he had the hardest time because on defense he drew the opposing team's top scorer."

Fagan says Coleman doesn't yet have any other visits lined up for the spring.

"At the end of the day though, he's focused on academics and school ball. Those two things are his primary focus," Fagan said.

Cathedral defeated Lawrence North in the sectional playoffs yesterday [Feb. 26] by a score of 64 to 59.
