Mixon nearing second cut of schools

Five-star running back Joe Mixon of Oakley (Calif.) Freedom talks about when he'll make his next cut of schools, what visits he's eyeing in the fall, and where he stands with Notre Dame.

One of the top running backs in the 2014 class, Joe Mixon of Oakley (Calif.) Freedom, plans to trim his current list of 16 schools down to 10 in the very near future.

"I am going to trim down my list very soon," Mixon said. "It will probably be within the next week or so, and I will come out with a top 10."

Mixon said he wasn't ready to preview which schools would be included in the cut, but he remains in frequent contact with the Irish.

"I talk with [Notre Dame assistant] Coach (Mike) Denbrock once or twice a week," Mixon said. "He just tells me that I'm their guy. I'm at the top of their board and they want me."

"Notre Dame uses their running backs a lot and they have a lot of success in their offense," the 6-foot-2, 210-pound running back added. "Their academics are really good, and there's no way you can go wrong with the mix of school and football that they offer."

When Mixon goes from 16 to 10, he'll consider a number of factors.

"I will look at how hard a school is recruiting me, but I will also look at academics and how much support I will receive in different areas of life if I go to that school," Mixon said.

Mixon already has one official visit planned and that is to Oklahoma on Oct. 4. He's also certain of another particular school that will receive an official.

"I know Georgia will get an official visit, I just don't know when," Mixon said.

Mixon has a plan for how he will continue to narrow his list.

"After this summer, I'll trim my list from 10 to around seven," he said. "I'll take my five official visits, and I will also visit a couple schools that are near me in the fall."

Mixon is unsure of his visit plans for the remainder of the summer other than attending The Opening in July, but he is camping at Arizona State on Thursday night.

Mixon is a five-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 5 running back in the 2014 class by Scout.com.
