Watkins joins the Irish
After four-star cornerback Nick Watkins visited Notre Dame for his official visit two weeks ago for Notre Dame's game against USC, the Dallas Bishop Dunne standout named the Irish his leader. However, he maintained that he was not quite ready to pull the trigger for Notre Dame until he visited a few other programs, namely UCLA, USC and Oregon. But, Watkins decided to give his commitment earlier than expected to Texas area recruiter and Notre Dame cornerbacks coach Kerry Cooks. Watkins chose the Irish over finalists Alabama, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, UCLA and USC. Watkins emphasized throughout his recruitment he was prioritizing a business school, a solid relationship with the coaching staff, and a place where he felt comfortable as his main criteria for his college decision. After his official visit, the No. 9 ranked cornerback in the 2014 class told IrishEyes.com: "Coach Kelly was mainly telling me how Notre Dame is a place I can go to be successful," Watkins said. "Coach Cooks was saying the same thing. He said he would take care of us. Going to Notre Dame is a life-changing decision that will set you up for the next 40 to 50 years of your life." Watkins is Notre Dame's first defensive back commit in the 2014 class. The Irish feel good about their chances of landing Watkins' teammate, four-star safety Payton Hendrix as well.
