Louisiana DT previews Irish official

Three-star defensive tackle Courtney Garnett of New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine will officially visit Notre Dame this weekend after hauling in an offer from the Irish this week. Garnett talks about Notre Dame's chances of edging out the Sooners to land him.

Notre Dame extended an offer to defensive tackle Courtney Garnett of New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine this week, and the three-star will officially visit the Irish this weekend, the last weekend before National Signing Day.

"Notre Dame is an all-around great school," Garnett said. "It has one of the best academic programs for the student-athlete, and that's not much more you need to say than that."

Garnett is down to two schools, Oklahoma and Notre Dame, and the Sooners hold the lead.

"Oklahoma is the front-runner," Garnett said. "But, you can't pass up an opportunity to visit Notre Dame and see what it's all about in person when opportunities like that present themselves. I want to see what Notre Dame is all about, and if I could see myself being comfortable there."

The former Texas commit took an official visit to Oklahoma on Jan. 17, 10 days after he decommitted from the Longhorns.

"The Sooners have a great football program and they compete with the best in the nation," Garnett said. "I like the atmosphere there."

Notre Dame first tried reaching out to Garnett "a couple weeks ago," according to the defensive tackle.

"I just didn't jump on it when they first reached out to me," Garnett said. "But, I'm on it now. I want to see what they're about. I've been keeping in touch with Coach (Kerry) Cooks and Coach (Mike) Elston."

"Notre Dame is changing its scheme to a 4-3," Garnett added. "They have a new defensive coordinator who thinks I'd be a great fit in this scheme as a one- or three- technique."

Garnett is a three-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 59 defensive tackle in the class of 2014.
