With National Signing Day 2014 upon us, Notre Dame
has received commitments thus far from 22 prospects. The Irish are still in contention to land five more players, all of whom will announce their decisions at some point today.
The Five in Contention
Summary: Alexander will likely choose between Notre Dame and Stanford. The Cardinal have led for much of Alexander's recruitment, but since offering in January, Notre Dame has made up a lot of ground. The question is, has it been enough ground to overtake Stanford?
Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Stanford
Summary: Notre Dame offered Cage in mid-January, and the Irish immediately jumped into the mix to land him. Cage took an official to Notre Dame during the middle of last week and came away impressed. O'Malley predicted Notre Dame would land Cage earlier this week and Berk has reported Notre Dame's closed the gap.
Michigan State and Notre Dame
Summary: A former Texas commit, Garnett committed to Oklahoma (Jan. 30) three days after he received an offer from Notre Dame (Jan. 27). Garnett still took an official to South Bend this past weekend, after which he contemplated briefly pushing back his decision date. However, Notre Dame wasn't able to host Garnett's parents on campus due to time restraints, and the staff also was not able to make an in-home visit due to the dead period, and that could matter in the end. This race is closer than perhaps many think, and the Irish could end up snagging him.
Notre Dame, Oklahoma
Smith has favored USC throughout the process, and as of early January, things were trending hard in that direction. However, Oregon and Notre Dame have both come on strong this past month, and Smith seems like the type of prospect to blaze his own trail, despite having multiple connections at USC. Notre Dame appears to be on the outside looking in at this point. Scout.com's west coast analyst, Greg Biggins, has repeatedly cautioned that Oregon could be the team to beat here.
Notre Dame, Oregon, USC
Summary: Quick has favored Oklahoma, Notre Dame and UCLA throughout much of the process. This will come down to Notre Dame and Oklahoma. The Sooners have been the longer-standing favorite to land Quick, but Notre Dame has come on strong in the end, solidifying its place as a legit contender after Brian Kelly's in-home.
