Notre Dame defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks had some major catching up to do on defensive back Justin Tranquill's recruitment.

On Friday, despite not being able to compete in Irish Invasion, four-star junior defensive back Justin Tranquill of Fort Wayne (Ind.) Carroll still made the trip to South Bend to visit Notre Dame.

"I had to fly out of South Bend on Friday night, so that's why I didn't have time to participate in camp," Tranquill said. "We had 7-on-7 nationals in Florida the next day."

One of the obvious highlights of the day for Tranquill was being able to see where his older brother and four-star Irish freshman linebacker/safety, Drue Tranquill, would be living the next four years.

"It was really exciting to see Drue," Tranquill said. "I was at Indiana when he moved in, so it was my first time seeing him since then."

However, perhaps the most important part of the visit for Tranquill was his conversation with Irish defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks.

"I know Coach (Mike) Elston said they are looking to take a couple of more defensive backs and another safety," Tranquill said. "I was also talking with Coach Cooks, and he didn't knew I was working out as a defensive back, which I thought was pretty comical. He thought I was a slot wide receiver because that's what most of my junior highlights are from in high school last season, and he said they only wanted one more slot guy. He seemed very confused when I told him I wanted to work out at camp this summer as a defensive back. He was like, 'I like to only work with trained defensive backs at camp.'"

"So, I explained to him I was a defensive back, and now he's going to look at some of my new highlights from AWP and get back to me," Tranquill said. "So, hopefully, this potentially opens a new door for me. I know they want to see me in play in person before they move on anything."

Tranquill was invited to camp at Notre Dame today (Tuesday), but he has a school event preventing him from making it. So far this summer, he has visited Michigan State, Michigan, Indiana, and Northwestern. Future plans include camping at Ohio State on July 25.

As for right now, Tranquill continues to take the recruiting process in stride. So far, he has offers from the likes of Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana and Purdue.

"I wouldn't say I have any leaders," Tranquill said. "Right now, I'm building relationships with coaches and sorting through things. I think the month of July will be big for me as far as that goes."

Will the 5-foot-11, 195-pound safety release a top list any time soon?

"It all depends," Tranquill said. "I'm playing it by ear because I don't want to release a top group and then pick up another offer and have to change it. Drue experienced that with the late Notre Dame offer. So, it all just depends on what my offer list looks like."

Tranquill is a four-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 13 safety in the class of 2015.
