Fresh off some impressive performances by Irish pitchers over the weekend, sophomore Derik Olvey took the mound for Notre Dame on Tuesday and pitched one of his finest games in a Notre Dame uniform. Olvey dominated a good hitting Bowling Green team for five innings to pick up the win for the Irish. Notre Dame also got the bats going by scoring 14 runs on 20 hits on the evening as the Irish defeated Bowling Green, 14-2.

Seven Irish hitters collected at least two hits as the Irish (17-14) bombed a solid Bowling Green (20-9) team on Tuesday.

Sophomore Derik Olvey (2-1) delivered another impressive performance for the Irish, pitching six innings, allowing four hits, two runs and zero walks on the evening.

Olvey’s control was masterful through the first five innings as he painted the strike zone with a healthy diet of overpowering fastballs, changeups and an occasional breaking pitch that kept a solid hitting Bowling Green team off balance.

The Irish were lead by a number of regulars at the plate. Alex Nettey (3-for-4, 2R, 2 RBI), Brett Lilley (2-for-5, R, 2 RBI), Matt Edwards (2-for-4, R), Tony Langford (3-for-4, 2R, RBI), Ross Brezovsky (2-for-4, R, RBI), Greg Lopez (2-for-4, 2R, RBI), and Sean Gaston (3-for-4, 2R, 2 RBI) added to the 20 hits the Irish collected at the plate—their best performance in 87 games at the plate.

The Irish bullpen, the Achilles heel much of the season, also delivered another impressive performance on Tuesday.

Joey Williamson, Mike Dury and David Gruener each pitched an inning for the Irish in relief of Olvey, allowing just one hit over the final three innings to secure Notre Dame’s 17th win on the season.

The Irish won their first of 13 home games on Tuesday and will be back at Frank Eck Stadium on Wednesday with a game against Central Michigan. Freshman Wade Korpi (3-0) is scheduled to start for the Irish.
