Kai Forbath of Notre Dame high school (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) might be one the top kickers in the nation. Last year he was successful on 19-of-21 field goal attempts and he connected on all 73 of his PAT attempts. What interest does Forbath have in moving to the Midwest to play college football for Notre Dame?
“They’re one of my top picks, but I’ve never been there. I’d have to take a trip out there to find out more,” replied Forbath.
Will distance be an issue for this southern California prospect?
“Not too much,” he responded. “It would really depend on how I liked the campus and the school.
“I’ve talked to coach Polian a couple times. He does a good job recruiting and making the school sound good.”
Has Notre Dame offered?
“They said they wanted to see me kick,” said Forbath. “Coach Polian was in Las Vegas last weekend for a combine and saw me kick there.
“There were about 40 coaches at the combine and I thought I did well.”
What schools are you most interested in at this time?
“UCLA (offer), USC, Oregon (offer), Cal, Northwestern (offer), LSU (offer),” he replied.
Would the fact that a school just signed a kicker affect your decision?
“That’s a big reason I wouldn’t want to go there,” he said “I want to go somewhere I can play and don’t have to wait three-four years to kick.”
Kai is mostly known for his kicking, but does he have the leg to also punt in college?
“I think so. My punting has improved considerably,” he replied. “I averaged 45 yards per punt last year with over a four second hang time.”
What type of accuracy does Forbath have and does he have the leg to kick-off?
“I don’t have my stats, but. I’m pretty accurate from 40 to 49 yards,” he said. “I think I’m consistent past 50 yards – maybe to 55.
“The majority of my kick-offs are in the end zone.”
Forbath reports a 3.2 GPA/1590 SAT (new version)--no retest.
Comments: From what we have heard, Kai is likely one of the top kickers in the country, and if you’re going to sign a kicker you might as well sign the best. Coach Polian was at his school last week and then went to see him at the kicking combine, which indicates that Notre Dame is very serious. I do get the sense that it will be difficult to lure him from the west coast.
