West Looking Forward to Irish Visit

George West

Northeast high school (Oklahoma City, Okla.) athlete George West isn't sneaking up on many opponents this season. He was targeted early in the season by defenses, and now that he has committed to Notre Dame, he can't make a move without the entire defense tracking him.

George West is taking all the attention he's receiving in stride. He understands that defenses are going to focus their attention on him, and he understands that his individual stats will suffer. Although his Northeast lost a close game this past weekend, he is confident that his team will bounce back.

"We lost a tough one, 14-7 to one of our city rivals, Star Spencer. I think they were No. 8 in 4A.," West said. "We're 5-1 and four teams make it to the play-offs from district so were still sitting pretty good.

"There was a lot of focus on me, but they have a strong defensive line, and that's what pretty much kept them in the game. Then we made a lot of mistakes in our passing game, and I think that's what really cost us."

West received an early scholarship offer from the Notre Dame coaching staff and accepted it on September 22 even though he hadn't visited the Notre Dame campus. He'll get his first look at the campus this weekend when he takes his official visit for the USC football weekend.

"Yeah, I'm pretty excited," West said about his first trip to Notre Dame. "I'm not even sure what time I'm leaving, I let my parents handle all that. I just know that I'm getting on the plane to go."

This will be a very big recruiting weekend for the Irish coaching staff as most of Notre Dame's top prospects will be in town to take in the USC game. It's a big game and will showcase how far Charlie Weis has taken his team six games into his first year.

"I'm taking Notre Dame," said West on which team he thinks will win on Saturday. "I think all they need to do is slow USC down and then the Notre Dame's offense will take over.

"They (USC) have a lot of weapons with Reggie Bush, (Dwayne) Jarrett and (LenDale) White. What I was seeing (last weekend) is that they were getting stopped by Arizona for awhile and on a couple key series. Hopefully when they come up to Notre Dame we can get a couple key stops and get the momentum. I know they (Notre Dame coaches) will have some nice schemes up their sleeves, so they'll do alright".

George is anxious to get a feel for the Notre Dame game experience and he's looking forward to seeing the campus. He will also get an opportunity to meet a few players that will be in his recruiting class.

"Darrin Walls got in touch with me through email," West explained. "I was talking to him before he committed. He asked why I picked Notre Dame, and we talked about our situations. Then after he committed we just talked about school and how we wanted to go up there and have fun. I'm supposed to meet him up there for the USC game this weekend."
