Gerald Jones Interested in Irish

College coaches aren't sure where they want to use Gerald Jones once he arrives on campus. All they know right now is that he has an abundance of talent and they want an opportunity to coach him. The standout athlete from Millwood high school (Oklahoma City, Okla.) has a bunch of scholarship offers, including one from Notre Dame.

Gerald Jones (6-1, 190-pounds) isn't a prospect that a lot of Notre Dame fans have been talking about, and that's probably just fine with him. The mild-mannered Jones is just excited to be in the position to accept a scholarship to play football at a Division I program.

"Notre Dame has actually been recruiting me very hard. I go my scholarship offer at the end of March," responded Jones when asked about Notre Dame. "I got to talk to Charlie Weis… he's a nice guy. He actually came down to talk to my coach. Charlie Weis is a great man. He's very cool. I'm honored for him to actually take his time out to come down here. Not too many head coaches come down to meet the players now. That says a lot about him and his program. As far as him, he's a great, great man -- he's cool."

"Notre Dame wants me to play offense and I'm cool with that," Jones said when asked where the Irish plan to use him. "I prefer being on offense. I think they want me at wide receiver. I think that's where they need me at and I'm fine with that. Wherever a team needs me at, I'm there for them. I really don't have a preferred position as long as I have the ball in my hands."

Jones will have plenty of options when he does sit down and decide where he would like to play college football. Gerald already has scholarship offers from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Kansas State, Kansas, Tennessee, Nebraska, Michigan, Florida, Hawaii, Arkansas, and Colorado.

"My first offer was around September or October from Texas Tech. It was at the end of 2005, beginning of 2006, when the offers first started pouring in," explained Jones about his recruitment. "I really don't have a top five. I'm really interested in Notre Dame. I have a high level of interest in them, but I'm considering everyone right now. They're up there but I'm really open to looking at everyone who has offered me a scholarship.

"I really haven't had a chance to do any research, so I'm going off who I like and what I like about that program. Everyone knows Notre Dame is a great football program as well as academics…one of the best in the country. They have Charlie Weis as a coach. He's been in the NFL and won Super Bowls with the Patriots.

"I'm really going to base it on people's personality," he continued. "Since I'm moving away from home I want a family. Is there team unity? Those are the questions I'm going to ask on my visits. They're up there though, I do like Notre Dame."

As a junior quarterback Jones had 203 carries for 1,900 yards and 24 touchdowns. He passed for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns.
