Tom Zbikowski gets the all clear.

Posted Aug 23, 2006

Tom Zbikowski has nothing to worry about now but Georgia Tech. The NCAA came to a quick conclusion that the Irish safety, as well as basketball players Luke Zeller and Kyle McAlarney will not face any penalty for their involvement in a bump for a local sports television program.

In what was called an "implied endorsement" of the show, the issue was classified as secondary. Notre Dame will get an official letter in a few weeks from the NCAA.

"The matter raised over the weekend has been resolved," stated John Heisler, the Senior Associate Athletics Director. "Our compliance staff researched the situation and provided the details and information to the NCAA. The NCAA called back this afternoon and indicated as far as its concerned, the matter’s closed, there are no penalties involved, there are no eligibility implications."

Headed by Mike Karwoski, Notre Dame’s compliance staff interviewed people involved with the TV show, the three student athletes, and submitted a report to the NCAA on Tuesday. Around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the NCAA phoned in the good news.

In what was typical protocol, the athletes were ineligible, but have been reinstated.

"I appreciate the fact this was handled in an expeditious manner by the NCAA as well as our compliance and sports information department," head coach Charlie Weis said in a prepared statement. "I am glad we have a resolution to this situation and I look forward to continuing our preparation for Georgia Tech."
