When a school invites a recruit to take an official visit over a football weekend, they hope to make a lasting impression. Ben Martin (6-foot-6, 220 pounds) was one of several high-profile athletes on hand to watch the Gators escape with an exciting victory over South Carolina.
"That game was a heart attack," Martin said of the Florida win. "It was a great atmosphere. The people down there are crazy about Florida football. When the field goal got blocked I didn't know what was going to happen. It was crazy. That would be a great environment to play in if you're the home team. If you're not the home team, I don't think you want to be there.
"The trip was better than I expected. I didn't really know what to expect going in, but they showed us a good time. I like the honesty of the coaches. They kept everything out in the open. It was just a nice learning experience. I know they work hard down there"
"There were a lot of recruits in for the game," Martin said. "I saw Armando [Allen] and his mom. He's a real cool guy. All the recruits are high-character guys. I can't say anything bad about the kids that they're recruiting because they're good kids."
After witnessing a thrilling game at the Swamp, Martin will make another trip this weekend to watch the nation's top two teams battle for the Big Ten championship and a spot in the national championship game.
"I'm going to the Ohio State-Michigan game," Martin explained. "It's going to be an unofficial visit. I haven't scheduled my official yet, but it will be sometime in December.
My Tennessee visit will also be sometime in December."
Notre Dame was Martin's first official visit. Even though he won't get back to South Bend, the Irish are still very much in the race.
"Yes sir," Martin replied when asked if Notre Dame still had a chance to sign him. "I stay in touch with all the coaches. Coach Minter called me last week."
Ben Martin of La Salle High School (Cincinnati, Ohio) made his second of four official visits over the weekend when he traveled to Florida to watch the Gators take on Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks.
