Notre Dame didn’t have any official visitors this past weekend to watch the Irish dismantle Army on senior day, but they did have some key juniors taking unofficial visits this past weekend. One key recruit was wide receiver Mike Floyd.
At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, wide receiver
Mike Floyd
has already become a household name for Irish recruiting nuts. The super junior prospect finished his season with 63 receptions, 1,240 yards and 16 touchdowns for Cretin Derham high school in St. Paul, Minn.
Notre Dame isn’t the only school after Floyd as Ohio State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas State and a host of others have already offered Floyd at this early stage in recruiting.
But the Irish were at the center of his attention this weekend for his unofficial visit.
“It was real nice,” Floyd said of his time spent on Notre Dame’s campus. “I really liked everything about it. It was cool just being there for a game day.”
Floyd said he and his party were given a tour by former Irish quarterback Ron Powlus.
“We got there early to check it all out. Ron Powlus gave us a tour of everything,” he said. “I went down with some people from my school and I took my girlfriend so she could see it,” he said. “We saw the weight room and the “Gug,” and pretty much everything I’ve seen before.”
Floyd has been to Notre Dame before when he attended Notre Dame’s camp over this past summer.
"I was there for camp last summer and really got to know the coaches,” he said. “I just really like their offense and how they use their receivers. I'm also really getting comfortable with the coaching staff there. I talked to Charlie Weis. He told me what he plans to do with the offense. I really like what they're going to do. Coach Ianello is recruiting me and I really like him. We keep in touch."
The likely future Scout.com top 100 player said he also stuck around for the end of the game when Irish fans saluted the senior players.
"It was crazy. The game was a blowout. Most places would just empty, but the whole place was full after the game,” he said. “It was really cool to see that. The fans stuck around and it was wild. You can tell they really support the team." Floyd also knows Notre Dame’s plans for recruiting receivers in the future.
"They said they were bringing in just two wide receivers,” he said of the Irish staff. “They were thinking about bringing in three or four, but they're only bringing in two this year." "They've offered two of us,” he said of their plans for 2008 recruiting. "I got to know Dan (Buckner) real well when I was at camp. I talk to him a lot. I'm going to go down there and visit him and hang out with him." So where do the Irish sit with Floyd on his favorites list?
“I feel real good about Notre Dame right now,” he said. “I feel real comfortable there and everything is cool there. They’re right at the top of my list.”
