The Gales scored six runs in the sixth inning, all with two outs, to propel them to a 9-4 win over the Irish at the Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC. Notre Dame falls to 1-3 under new head coach Dave Schrage. Tomorrow, the Irish will battle TCU (6-2), who lost to undefeated Coastal Carolina 11-6 on Friday.
The Irish got on the scoreboard early. Mike Dury’s single drove in Danny Dressman in the first inning to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead. They made it 2-0 when freshman Michael Wright scored on a Jeremy Barnes fielder’s choice. Dury tripled in the next at-bat to make it 3-0 after three innings of play. Dury was a force at the plate. He went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs on the afternoon.
Wade Korpi (1-1) got the loss for the Irish. The junior left-hander was cruising in the sixth inning. He got the first two batters out and appeared to be the beneficiary of a 1-2-3 frame. But a throwing error on freshman A.J. Pollock allowed the floodgates to burst open. UNC-Wilmington managed to score six runs in the frame. Korpi was only charged with one earned run and allowed just three hits in 5.2 innings of work. He did walk five batters but errors hurt his chances for a 2-0 start. Notre Dame committed two more errors in the sixth, another by Pollock and the other by Ryan Connolly. For the contest, the Irish made four errors and they’ve committed nine errors in three games.
Notre Dame out hit UNC-Wilmington (4-5) 11-8. One of these came in the ninth when Dury drove in Dressman again with a double. Dressman was 2-of-4 on the day while Wright also notched two hits.
