Notre Dame found itself in an early 3-0 hole Friday night at Cincinnati. The Irish were in the opposite situation on Thursday when they took a three-run lead after the first inning. The Bearcats came back to win the contest 4-3. On Friday, Notre Dame did show some fight and tied the contest up at three. But Cincinnati was once again the benefit of a crucial Irish error that led them a win.

The Bearcats’ Michael Earley scored on a throwing error by Matt Weglarz and it proved to be the difference in Cincinnati’s 4-3 victory over Notre Dame. The Irish fall to 13-16 on the season and just 1-6 in Big East play. Notre Dame will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow against the Bearcats. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.

Cincinnati jumped on the Irish’s David Phelps (4-3) right away. The Bearcats scored two runs in the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. Neall French and Adam Yeager both delivered RBI singles for Cincinnati. In the second inning, the Bearcats made it 3-0 when Michael Obyc scored on a double play groundout. Obyc reached base on an error by Notre Dame’s Brayden Ashdown.

The Irish would start to chip away off of Dan Osterbrock (5-1). Notre Dame cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth. Danny Dressman led the frame off with a single and later scored on a throwing error by the Bearcat catcher. Mike Dury plated the second run of the inning on Ashdown’s RBI single. On the night, Dressman was the only Irish batter to record multiple hits. The rally was complete in the sixth when Dressman singled home Ross Brezovsky to tie the contest up at 3-all.

It didn’t take long for the Bearcats to respond. In the bottom of the sixth, Cincinnati scored the game-winner on a throwing error by Weglarz after a walk. Phelps took the loss, pitching eight inning and allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out seven. The Bearcats held the one-run advantage for the final three innings. Osterbrock pitched three straight 1-2-3 innings to close out the win for Cincinnati.
