Darius Fleming of St. Rita High School became Notre Dame’s ninth commitment for the 2008 recruiting class. By joining the class Fleming becomes the third linebacker to commit to the Irish.

Darius Fleming held off the urge to commit to Notre Dame for several weeks and today ended his recruitment when he sat down with Notre Dame’s head coach.

“I made it offical and committed this morning,” Fleming responded when asked the details of his commitment. “Me and my dad talked with coach Weis and I told him that Notre Dame is the place that I wanted to be and that I wanted to play for him.

“Coach Weis congratulated me. He told me that I was the type of guy that he was looking for and he said that he was pretty happy about my commitment. He said that I be a big asset to the recruiting class. He said that he was glad that I was going and that he thought that I was making the right decision, because Notre Dame has everything that I’m looking for.”

After his first visit to Notre Dame in March, Fleming was favoring the Irish heavily. Darius made several visits to South Bend after that time, but waited to commit.

“I wanted to see how the fans were,” Fleming explained. “I wanted to see the school in depth, spend some time with the players and just spend some time there. I really just wanted to see how the people were. I liked it and now I really just see myself there.

“It was the one school that had the best academics and athletics. It’s real close to home. You can’t get better than the school that you really want to go to being so close to home. I can go home every now and then. That really helped me make my decision easier.

“I really looked at the people that were committed to Notre Dame and a lot of them were good friends and I want to play with them,” Darius said. “We’re looking pretty solid at linebacker right now. I’m looking forward to playing with Anthony McDonald and David Posluszny. I’m looking forward to playing with Sean [Cwynar] and Braxston [Cave].”

As a junior, Fleming registered 105 tackles, with 15 for loss, nine sacks, forced four fumbles, recovered three fumbles and tipped six passes.
