Ethan Johnson Is Making Plans For the Summer

Notre Dame is off to a solid start to their 2008 recruiting class. They have landed commitments from several of their top recruiting targets, and the Irish staff would like to keep that momentum moving forward. Defensive end Ethan Johnson from Lincoln High School (Portland, Ore.) is near the top of Notre Dame's wish list and he has made plans to visit South Bend.

Notre Dame has made Ethan Johnson (6-foot-4, 265 pounds) a priority for the 2008 recruiting class, but they will have a lot of competition for his signature.

"Notre Dame should be by my school sometime this week," Johnson responded when asked about his contact with Notre Dame. "They send me letters as much as anyone. I've been hearing mostly from coach Oliver and coach Brown mostly. They e-mail me quite a bit, but I really don't talk to them that much. I don't have a cell phone so they get in touch with me through e-mail.

"Coach Brown seems like a nice guy. It sounds like he knows what he's talking about. I haven't met him or talked to him, but I think I'll get a chance to meet him sometime this week."

Johnson is one of the top defensive linemen in the country and he already has scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, Oregon, Oregon State, Colorado, Auburn, Arizona State, Washington, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Virginia.

"I'm considering all of them now," Johnson explained. "I wouldn't say that there are two or three schools that stand out. All the schools that have offered are pretty much my frontrunners. I'm taking it slow and trying to find out as much information that I can about all the schools. I stay in contact with the coaches through e-mail, so that I can see what they're like. I look at their depth chart over the internet. I see how good their business school is. Once summer comes around I'll narrow it down from there. I'm taking it slow and I'll start knocking the schools off once I get a chance to visit the schools.

"[My top schools] changes sporadically, because I'm getting information about a bunch of different schools. I haven't really had time to sit down and think about a favorite school, but I sit down about every two weeks and look over all the information that I have. Over the long run my No.1 school might be No.10 right now because it's too early to say who my leader is.

"It will come down to where I feel comfortable," Johnson said. "I might not feel comfortable at a big school such as Notre Dame, USC or Michigan. I might feel more comfortable at one of the other schools. It really all depends on the feel. It is great to have all those offers though and those big schools are great for a reason, but in the end it might not be great for me."

Johnson has already visited several schools and he is making plans to take a few trip this summer.

"I've visited Oregon and Oregon State," Johnson said. "I'm going to visit Oregon again because they have the Nike camp there. I've already been to USC and I hope I can go back down there for their camp.

"I'm going to go down to Notre Dame June 24-27 for their camp. I've already made those plans. Other than that I really haven't made any hard plans. I think I'll visit Auburn to see if I like it in the South.

"I'm just enjoying the process right now," Johnson said. "I want to visit all those places because I can. Who knows where your life will take you. Who knows what opportunities I'd be passing up if I didn't take a look at all the different schools."
