Sam Longo: 2009 Prospect

Notre Dame is starting to recruit Ohio better than they had in the past. The Irish coaching staff is already starting to look at the juniors and as usual, the state of Ohio is loaded with talent. A player the Irish appear to be interested is offensive lineman Sam Longo from Bellbrook High School (Ohio).

Sam Longo (6-foot-4, 240 pounds) is just 16 years old, but he has already gotten he attention of several top programs. Bellbrook head coach Kevin Basinger has already been busy sorting Longo's recruiting mail, and he expects more to start flowing in.

"He's been getting mail from just about everybody," coach Basinger responded when asked Longo. "He's got a lot of information from a lot of universities. Last spring and early in the summer, we had a lot of interest from all over. We're expecting to get a bunch of stuff today.

"We're getting stuff from all the Big Ten schools like Ohio State. We're getting stuff from Nebraska. We've gotten stuff from Notre Dame and West Virginia. We're getting it from all over the country. There will be a lot of neat opportunities for the young man."

Although the Longo appears to have some interest in the Irish, it will be very difficult to pull him from the Buckeyes.

"I did send a tape out to Notre Dame," coach Basinger said. "I think he'd be interested in Notre Dame. I think he's looking for the most academic situation as possible. His dad, Gene, played linebacker for Ohio State back in the early ‘80s, and I think he wants to be a Division I kid. He's going to work hard and make sure he has every thing taken care of academically, because he wants to have the opportunity to have the best education that he can."

Coach Basinger has seen Longo grow up in front him, but realizes that Sam is still young and he'll get even better.

"I think that what people see in him is that he's just 16 and he's out there doing the things that he does," coach Basinger explained. "There's a lot of room for improvement, but the one thing that stands out is his quickness and foot speed. He's a young rangy kid that is just growing into his body.

"He plays right tackle for us. He's very quick. He can get out and move. He's just learning to be an offensive lineman. He's doing very well, and he did very well in all the summer camps and combines that he participated in. We're looking forward do a lot of great things from him. He's got an injured wrist right now that will slow him up for a couple weeks. It's tender right now, and he's still trying to figure out what he can and can't do with it, but he should be fine."

Longo has a 3.6 g.p.a.
