James Talks ND Scholarship Offer

James helped St. Xavier win state two years ago.

Following the Notre Dame-Pittsburgh game earlier this season, Matt James saw an old friend in the Irish locker room.

Matt James and freshman tight end Kyle Rudolph went to the same grade school, and the two Cincinnati, Ohio products were able to catch up for a few minutes following the game.

"He was just trying to say how great the school is pretty much," James said. "He was talking about how I should go there."

Now the 6-foot-7, 285-pound James has the chance.

A couple weeks ago, Notre Dame extended the standout class-of-2010 offensive tackle from St. Xavier High a scholarship offer.

"They sent me an email saying to call coach (Charlie) Weis," James began. "After school, I called up the number and I talked to him.

"He asked if I was interested, and I said yes, and he said I have an offer from Notre Dame. We talked about me getting up there maybe for a basketball game this winter."

James, who said he liked the atmosphere at Notre Dame following his first-ever visit back in early November, also holds scholarship offers from places like Ohio State, Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Stanford, Duke and Akron.

He just might take Weis up on a visit this winter.

"The academics and tradition are pretty impressive," James said.

James also feels that Notre Dame is headed in the right direction.

"Compared to last year, they're getting better."

James has also taken in games at Ohio State and Cincinnati this fall, and is gearing up for upcoming junior days.

"I'm going to wait and see what happens everywhere."
