The Clay High standout is hearing from the likes of Notre Dame, nearly every program in the Big Ten, and places like Louisville, Oregon and Texas. Daniel Smith attended every Irish home game this fall on unofficial visits, and is the brother-in-law of former Notre Dame safety Gerome Sapp. He also took a trip to Indiana for the Northwestern game.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Smith is a three-year varsity starter. This past season, he had 51 receptions for 1,071 yards and nine touchdowns. He also intercepted seven passes from his safety spot, helping lead the Colonials to the Sectional Championship game.
The four-star Smith, who has a 3.6 GPA, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds, is also a standout on the track. At the state finals in late May, Smith took home two all-state medals. He finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet-10.25 inches, and ran a leg on the 1600-meter relay team that finished sixth. Smith has also cleared 6-foot-6 in the high jump, winning the sectional title with that mark.
Here is a look at Smith’s junior film, where it’s very evident that this receiver can go up and get the football. There is also footage from Smith’s sophomore and freshman seasons. That first year, Smith caught 49 passes for 800 yards and eight touchdowns. As a 10th grader, he caught 30 passes for 400 yards and another eight scores.
