The Irish got a strong pitching performance from a newcomer and a huge hit from its top player as they defeated Grambling State 3-2 in San Antonio.

Two outs, bottom of the ninth, tie game, bases loaded.

The kind of situation players dream of and the kind that great players take advantage of. Notre Dame’s A.J. Pollock is a great player and delivered a RBI single as the Irish defeated Grambling State 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon in San Antonio.

The Irish improve to 6-4 on the season while the Tigers drop to 3-9.

Notre Dame took a 2-1 lead into the top of the ninth, but Brandon Smith’s RBI single tied the game with two outs. Notre Dame reliever Steven Mazur was charged with the blown save, but Pollock’s single gave him the victory.

Freshman starter Dustin Ispas allowed just two hits in six innings of work without an earned run, although he did give up an unearned tally in the third.

Pollock finished with a pair of hits, including a double, while Greg Sherry had a hit and two runs scored.

The two teams will meet again on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT.
