Harangody, Jackson and Peoples named as Irish Hoops captains.

The following is a release from Notre Dame Athletics:

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame seniors Luke Harangody (Schererville, Ind.), Tory Jackson (Saginaw, Mich.) and Jonathan Peoples (Bellwood, Ill.) have been named captains for the 2009-10 men’s basketball campaign. All three student-athletes are first time captains for the Fighting Irish.

“This is a well-earned honor for all three of these players as it is an indication of the respect their teammates have for each one of them,” Irish head coach Mike Brey said.

“Luke, Tory and Jonathan will be the voices in our locker room and the leaders on the court for us this season.”

Harangody, a forward, earned All-America honors as both a sophomore and junior. He enters his senior season ranked eighth all-time in Notre Dame history with 1,823 points and needs 738 to break Austin Carr’s school record.

Harangody ranks fifth in Fighting Irish history with 949 rebounds and is 370 away from breaking Tom Hawkins’ Irish record. Harangody, the 2007-08 BIG EAST Player of the Year, led the league in both scoring and rebounding in each of the past two seasons.

He is the only player in the history of the BIG EAST to lead both of those categories in consecutive seasons. Harangody has started 83 of his 99 career games at Notre Dame.

Jackson, a guard, has played in all 101 contests, including 87 starts, during his career. He brings career averages of 8.9 points per game and 5.0 assists per game into his senior campaign. Last season, Jackson posted a career-best 10.6 points per game.

He reached double-figures in points on 20 occasions during the 2008-09 season and led the team in scoring four times. Jackson also dished out a career-high and team-best 177 assists (4.92 per game).

Peoples, a guard, has averaged 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in 95 career games, including two starts. Last season, he played in all 36 games and averaged 3.2 points per game and a career-best 2.3 rebounds per contest in addition to handing out a career-high 44 assists. Peoples shared the team’s Most Improved Player Award with Tyrone Nash.

Notre Dame will open exhibition play at the new Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center against Lewis on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. (ET). The regular season will get underway with a home tilt against North Florida on Saturday, Nov. 14.
